3 Warning Signs Of An Emotional Affair

Your spouse is getting quite a few text messages lately, even during the evening. You hesitate to look at the messages when they’re not around because you don’t want to invade their personal space. Unfortunately, your marriage may be experiencing one of the signs of an emotional affair.

Warning Sign #1

It may seem innocent at first. A colleague or mutual acquaintance of the opposite sex shares similar interests as your spouse. They just seem to hit it off and become fast friends. Like I said, innocent, right? It’s when the relationship crosses the line from friendship to something more intimate that your concern should be heightened.

This may very well turn out to be as innocent as it seems but be wary if your spouse changes their attitude toward you. By this I mean if you were having open discussions about work-related matters and now they don’t occur then that could be warning number one. If they say they don’t want to talk about work stuff, be concerned.

Warning Sign #2

Is your spouse spending time in online chat rooms or instant messaging sites? This one may seem obvious but that’s why I include it. If you really want to protect your marriage then you don’t need to overlook the obvious. If they are defensive when you ask who they are chatting with, then question their actions. Don’t jump down their throat, but be stern.

Whether it is texting on the cell phone, online chat rooms or webcams, the ease of use of technology does not make it right. These technologies just seem to provide opportunities for a spouse to be unfaithful.

Warning Sign #3

Is your communication virtually non-existent? If all you and your spouse “talk” about is the kid’s activities or the grocery list then it’s time to raise a flag. A healthy marriage is based on being open and transparent about everything. If that communication has changed then you need to be on guard.

These, by no means, are the only warning signs of an emotional affair but they are some that you should be aware of. Keeping your marriage safe and secure can a struggle, especially in the digital age in which we live. If you have an inkling that something is gong on, then, in my opinion, it’s okay to do some snooping.
